These designs are based on the idea that today’s furniture should be more than objects. They should be an experience. It is also a journey through Chinese traditional crafts and an attempt at developing a new perspective on them.
Like the craftsmen of the past Chinese dynasties I am inspired by nature. Looking back at the Ming Dynasty techniques in Suzhou, the cradle of the main school of cabinet making of this era, was an appealing challenge for me.
It is also a way of representing the contrast between the traditional China that gave this feeling of strength, permanence through an expression of stillness and today’s China that is in constant movement, like an acrobat that keeps moving to remain balanced on the wire.
This is what I wanted to capture in these designs in order to provide a meaningful, sensual experience.

My first ambition with the Dynaming collection is to emulate this balance between a thirst for novelty and a curiosity for tradition. My role as an outside observer of the Chinese culture does not put me in a position to define the modern Chinese aesthetic but instead gives me the liberty to look at the techniques in a new way, with the freedom to challenge them. The value of this process is to shed a new light on beautiful crafts by showing they are not confined to the usual aesthetic realm we associate them with. I believe a tradition that is injected with fresh creative blood is a living one.
